FAQs
How old are coral reefs?
Modern coral reef ecosystems were formed at least 240 million years ago and most established coral reefs are between 5,000 and 10,000 years old.
At what depths are coral reefs found?
As most corals contain photosynthetic algae, they require a certain amount of light to survive. Therefore, they are only found in shallow waters with depths of between 0- 60m.
What temperature ranges do corals live in?
Corals require a temperature of above 20 0C in order to survive. They are extremely sensitive to temperature changes, and can only cope with a narrow annual range of 4 0C. This is is why climate change poses such a big threat to these marine ecosystems.
How do corals sexually reproduce?
Corals can reproduce sexually through coral spawning. Large quantities of eggs and sperm are released into the water and then fertilised. Once fertilised, they attach themselves to a hard surface where they will begin to grow and eventually, colonies of corals develop. This mass coral spawning event only occurs in November during a full moon [4].
What can I do to help?
Raising awareness of the potential threats to coral reefs is essential if we are going to help to conserve them. Making sure you are familiar and up to date with relevant information on conservation concerns, sustainable tourism and climate change is also a great way of tackling the problem.
Where can I find more information?
There are numerous websites where information regarding this topic and other topics of tropical conservation concern can be found. Articles can be searched for and viewed through subscription to New Scientist (http://newscientist.com). The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) (http://ecotourism.org) are a global, non-profit association committed to promoting responsible tourism practices that benefit conservation and communities; and their website also has a lot of information regarding this subject. Relevant research can also be located through Journal articles such as those found in the International Society for Reef Studies (http://coralreefs.org).
